Cyber Fraud & Unauthorised Bank Transactions: What To Do in the First Hour
Speed matters. The first 60 minutes after you spot an unauthorised transaction can decide whether your money is recovered.
If you notice an unauthorised debit from your account, do not panic - but do move fast. Under RBI's limited-liability framework, reporting the fraud promptly can reduce or eliminate your liability entirely.
Your first-hour checklist
- Call your bank and block the card or account immediately
- Report the incident on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or dial 1930
- Note the acknowledgement number you receive
- Take screenshots of every SMS, email and app notification
Why a legal notice helps
Banks often require formal confirmation to reverse disputed transactions and pursue the beneficiary account. A legal notice, backed by your complaint copies, accelerates recovery.
Preserve every piece of digital evidence. Correctly preserved evidence is frequently the deciding factor in cyber-fraud recovery.

This literally saved me ₹80,000. Reported within the hour and the bank reversed it.
Sharing this with my parents. The 1930 helpline tip is so important.
